Meet The Guide Behind KBJ Collective

The Woman. The Work. The Why.

Hi, I'm Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson — wife, mom, nurse scientist, and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. I'm the founder of KBJ Collective, a space where dementia science meets real-life caregiving, built for care partners and the teams who support them.

If you're caring for someone living with dementia, you don't need more guilt or vague advice. You need clarity, practical tools, and a plan that supports quality of life for everyone involved.

Grounded Support for Caregiving Your Way

Grounded support for caregiving your way.
KBJ Collective exists to help care partners move from constant firefighting to grounded, sustainable care
with routines, scripts, and strategies that work in real life, not just on paper.

Some of My "Why" is Personal

My mother passed away when I was two, and I was raised by my grandmother — my Granny. Being loved and shaped by an older adult from the very beginning gave me a deep respect for aging, legacy, and the quiet strength it takes to care for family.

I'm also a domestic violence overcomer. That experience taught me how quickly life can change — and how complicated family becomes when safety and trust are no longer guaranteed.

Those chapters don't define me, but they do inform how I show up: with compassion, clarity, and a deep understanding that families are often doing the best they can in situations they never asked for.

And now, my Granny — the woman who raised me — is beginning to show signs of dementia. This work has always been personal. Now it's even more so.

That's why I care so deeply about families navigating dementia: when life shifts, you need support that's steady, practical, and safe.

Evidence That Actually Reaches Families

I'm also an internationally recognized dementia researcher. My work focuses on dementia caregiving, healthcare navigation, and quality of life for families — especially in the moments that feel most confusing and uncertain.

I've partnered with families and care teams across long-term care settings, so I understand how care shifts in assisted living and nursing homes. KBJ Collective translates that evidence into practical tools and next-step plans that families and organizations can actually implement.

The Values Behind The Work

  • Dementia care partners deserve support, not shame.

  • The goal isn’t perfection—it’s a sustainable rhythm.

  • Behavior is communication, and we can respond with skill and steadiness.

  • Care decisions should feel clear, not overwhelming.

  • Quality of life matters for the person living with dementia and the people caring for them.

Support For the Hardest Moments

  • Dementia-related behavior changes (resistance, agitation, sleep disruption, safety concerns)

  • Communication that reduces conflict and power struggles

  • Navigating healthcare appointments and decisions with more confidence

  • Building routines and boundaries that protect the care partner’s mental health

  • Creating a plan that fits real life—not an ideal world
